If the oils you use in your moisturiser are natural, does that mean they’re good for your skin?
We’re all for using natural oils, whether it’s in your food or in your skincare, but different oils have vastly different profiles and act on the skin in very different ways. So, knowing the type of skin you have, and choosing the right type of oil in your skincare is key to getting a good result.
Coconut oil, for example, is touted as a cure-all for all sorts of skincare. Some people use it on everything, from their face to their body to their hair. We love coconuts (especially in our ANZAC biscuits!) but we don’t use it in our range. Why?
Composed of about 80-90% saturated fat, coconut oil is solid at room temperature, just like butter (it actually contains more saturated fat than butter!). It is highly comedogenic, it clogs pores in other words, and often exacerbates acne and other oily skin issues as a result. Researchers think it does so by trapping bacteria and dead skin cells in the skin and its hair follicles, causing inflammation to result.
Some people even develop extremely dry skin after using it. Some researchers think that might be because it traps the skin’s own sebum, signalling the skin to produce less of its own.
So tasty as it is, we think coconut belongs in our biscuits, and not in skincare, especially for those who have sensitive, dry or fragile skin. All the natural oils used in our skincare are carefully chosen to gently nourish sensitive skin, and to encourage it to function at its best. They are chosen for their gentle profiles, low comedogenicity and for the right blend of fatty acids and skin-nourishing constituents they contain.
